The rise of vaping as an alternative to smoking has brought about a new concern: the environmental impact of vape waste. With their various components and non-biodegradable materials, vaping products have added a new challenge to the growing problem of electronic waste. At VapeCycle, we’re working to reduce this waste so it doesn’t end up in our environment, as 4.5 trillion cigarette butts do yearly worldwide. Now, we’re excited to share a huge milestone!
What A Waste
As the popularity of vaping has grown, so has the concern about the waste it generates. Vape devices, e-liquid cartridges, batteries, and other associated components pose a unique challenge due to their complex and often non-recyclable nature. Many of these items end up in landfills, releasing hazardous chemicals into the environment and contributing to the global electronic waste crisis.
VapeCycle To The Rescue
In response to this escalating issue, VAPO and alt. collaborated with TerraCycle to create VapeCycle, New Zealand’s first vape recycling programme. Armed with determination and a passion for sustainability, we launched an initiative to collect and properly dispose of vape waste that Kiwis can participate in for free all around NZ.
Two Tonnes of Saved Waste
After 4 years of collecting, we’re celebrating! VapeCycle has collected 2099kgs of vape waste, comprising a huge 130,975 individual units of vape parts! This accomplishment is a testament to the power of collective action, with 984 collectors participating!
A Sustainable Success
One of the critical elements to our success has been raising awareness around recycling used vapes and how people can participate, no matter where they are in New Zealand. Educating both vapers and non-vapers alike about responsible disposal methods and the importance of recycling has allowed us to achieve these fantastic results.
With VapeCycle bins in all 30 VAPO stores, recycling your vape has never been easier, and with increased visibility, we’re now spreading the message further and more comprehensively.

As conscientious global citizens, we are responsible for supporting sustainable practices. Recycling vape waste contributes to a healthier planet for future generations. We have ambitious goals to increase VapeCycle’s reach, and with the help of our community, we know we’re on the right track!
